THE MESSAGE

The biblical Greek definition of conviction (from the word elenchō) means to expose, reprove, or convince someone of the truth (John 16:8). The only one who can truly convict us of our sins is the Holy Spirit. As Jesus said, “When He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8, ESV).

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come upon certain individuals—like prophets, judges, and kings—for specific times and tasks (Judges 6:34; 1 Samuel 10:10; 2 Chronicles 24:20). The Spirit did not permanently dwell in people. But when Jesus died for us, “the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom” (Matthew 27:51), symbolizing that the separation between God and man was removed. Now, because of Jesus, all who put their trust in Him are filled with the Holy Spirit. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” (1 Corinthians 6:19). “If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ” (Romans 8:9).
